The Process of Moving

Story Time Thursday

Youthful Homesteader

Hello, and welcome to Story Time Thursdays!

As we begin to prepare to move, there’s so much to be done. The first thing is that we’ve started going through our stuff, deciding what to keep and what to get rid of. Since we plan to move a few states away and most of our stuff is not particularly nice anyway, it makes sense for us to “travel lightly”.

It would cost more for us to transport our current furniture than it would for us to buy new-to-us furniture after we move. With that in mind, we can sort most of it into two categories: those that are worth selling and those that should simply be donated or given away. Clothes are another thing to evaluate; if I haven’t worn it very often or it’s starting to get holes, it’s getting donated.

With the home business we own, we’re trying to sell that before moving as well. It’s become more of a burden that we’re just not suited to run with the current market conditions. Selling it would also mean we would have a lot less that needs to be moved.

With moving only being a couple months away, we’re also starting to think about packing. Even with getting rid of so much, there’s still a lot that will need to be packed up to bring with us, much more than can be done easily in a week.

Things to start doing early when moving:

  • Examine your belongings and decide what you want to keep

  • Of the things you don’t want to keep, decide what is worth selling and list it on OfferUp, Facebook Marketplace, or a similar platform

  • Of the things you don’t want to keep that aren’t worth much, donate it or take it to the dump

  • Start packing as early as possible
