Working and Homesteading

Story Time Thursday

Youthful Homesteader

Hello! Since we’re on the topic of money and homesteading, let’s talk about jobs that you can do once you’ve started homesteading.

One question I’ve seen often for off-grid style homesteading in particular is what jobs you can do. Like affording the start-up costs of homesteading, it’s not too different from traditional lifestyle jobs.

For me, I have a job in the tech field that allows me to work completely remote. As long as I have Internet service and electricity, I can continue to work at my current job. There are many other remote jobs that can be done from home as well, from sales, to customer service, to coding and digital design. That’s not to mention side hustles such as e-commerce if you’re the entrepreneurial type.

If tech-based or remote jobs aren’t your thing, you’ll likely be able to find a job matching your skills in a nearby town or city (though it may be a longer commute). Medical and trade-related skills are often in demand even in small towns. In this case, I would recommend getting into homesteading very gradually to make sure you aren’t biting off more than you can chew.

If you’re living further out in the country, it may be worth checking with nearby farms or ranches to see if they are hiring help. This can be a good learning opportunity for your own homesteading efforts as well.

Being further out in the country, you may be able to fulfill a need for nearby residents with any unique skills you have (many companies have a limit on how far they will drive to provide services). Hauling large items or starting a local contracting business (painting, plumbing, etc) could be a couple good options depending on the area.

Some job options for homesteaders:

  • Remote jobs such as coding or customer service

  • In-demand jobs in town

  • Local jobs with ranchers or farmers

  • Starting a business such as contracting

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”
